Introduction to the Course

A 7-Week Experiential Mentorship On The Gong

Gong School is a focused training for people ready to progress beyond intuitive experimentation and begin approaching the gong through skill, structure, and intentionally facilitated depth.

Whether you've never played a gong or already lead sound experiences, this is your opportunity to study the instrument with real clarity — with a teacher who has spent years refining exactly this curriculum.

Every module includes video instruction, listening exercises, practical homework, and live weekly sessions with Ben. Guest presenters from the global gong community join on select weeks.

The Science of Sound

Morphic Resonance & the Logic of Gongs

Are you familiar with the concept of morphic resonance? The idea that patterns of behavior and knowledge can be transmitted across space and time through a kind of invisible field?

Ben Irons has spent years exploring how the gong — with its infinite overtone structure and non-linear resonance — acts as a direct interface with this phenomenon. When you play a gong, you're not just making sound. You're drawing from a deep well of collective human experience with this instrument.

In Gong School 2.0, you'll learn not just how to play, but why it works — and how to harness that understanding to create more powerful, intentional experiences for yourself and others.

A Core Tool of the Course

The Listening Cards

One of the most beloved elements of Gong School is the Listening Cards system — a set of structured listening prompts that Ben has developed over years of teaching and practice.

Each card guides you to attend to a specific quality of the sound: texture, decay, spatial location, emotional resonance. Over time, this practice fundamentally changes how you hear — and how you play.

The Journey

Week-by-Week Breakdown

Weekly live Office Hours with Ben on Tuesdays. Guest presenters on select Thursdays. All sessions recorded.

01
Gong 101, Part 1
Getting Started — Foundations of the Gong

You'll begin with the fundamentals: gong history, types of gongs, and how to select your instrument. You'll learn basic playing position, grip, and stroke mechanics — the physical foundation everything else builds upon.

  • History and cultural context of the gong
  • Types: Chau, Paiste, Wind, Symphonic, Tam-Tam
  • How to select your first (or next) gong
  • Basic playing position, grip, and stroke mechanics
  • Introduction to the six timbres (sonic "colors")
  • Listening Card Exercise #1
02
Gong 101, Part 2
The Six Timbres — Mastering Sonic Color

A deep dive into the six timbres of the gong — the distinct sonic "colors" that every skilled player must be able to produce on demand. You'll practice each timbre and learn to move fluidly between them.

  • The six timbres: definition, technique, and application
  • Mallet selection and its effect on timbre
  • Stroke mechanics for each timbre
  • Transitioning between timbres in a live session
  • Listening Card Exercise #2
03
Gong 201, Part 1
Advanced Techniques — Pet the Kitty & Beyond

Ben's signature advanced techniques — including the famous "Pet the Kitty" stroke — for creating depth, texture, and dynamic range that beginners simply cannot access.

  • Pet the Kitty: technique, timing, and application
  • Desert Sun and other advanced strokes
  • Creating dynamic range: from whisper to thunder
  • Combining techniques for expressive playing
  • Listening Card Exercise #3
04
Gong 201, Part 2
The Physics of Sound — Morphic Resonance & Overtones

A deep exploration of the science and metaphysics behind why gongs work the way they do. Ben explores morphic resonance, the overtone series, and the neurological effects of sustained gong sound on the human nervous system.

  • The overtone series and why it matters
  • Morphic resonance: theory and application
  • How gong sound affects the nervous system
  • Using physics to make intentional sonic choices
  • Listening Card Exercise #4
05
Gong 301, Part 1
Sound Bath Facilitation — Holding Space

How to structure a complete sound bath session — from opening to close — and how to hold space for listeners in a way that creates genuine transformation.

  • Session structure: arc, timing, and pacing
  • How to hold space: presence, intention, and awareness
  • Working with different room sizes and acoustics
  • Guiding listeners without words
  • Listening Card Exercise #5
06
Gong 301, Part 2
Building Your Practice — Instruments, Business & Community

Everything you need to build a sustainable gong practice — from instrument selection and setup to finding your community and, if you choose, building a business around your work.

  • Building your instrument collection over time
  • Stands, mallets, and accessories
  • Finding and building your community
  • Offering sound baths: pricing, marketing, and ethics
  • Listening Card Exercise #6
07
Capstone
Your Capstone Project — Putting It All Together

The final week is yours. You'll design and deliver your own gong experience — a complete facilitation that integrates everything you've learned across the seven weeks. Ben provides individual feedback on every capstone submission.

  • Design your own complete sound bath session
  • Record and submit your capstone
  • Individual feedback from Ben Irons
  • Cohort sharing and celebration
  • Certificate of completion

Frank — Why Ben Irons
Frank Mocerino on Why Ben Irons

Ben Irons is a professional percussionist and full-time sound practitioner based in Boulder, Colorado, where he operates under the name ZenwithBen. Coming out of conservatory training, Ben has studied with world-class teachers and performed at a high level with several symphony orchestras — bringing a level of musical rigor and technical precision to sound healing that is genuinely rare in this space.

Ben's approach to the gong is rooted in deep listening. He teaches that the gong is not just an instrument to be played, but a teacher to be studied — one that reveals something new every time you sit with it. His classes are structured, rigorous, and profoundly experiential.

In Gong School 1.0, Ben guided students from complete beginners to confident practitioners in seven weeks. The feedback was extraordinary. Gong School 2.0 builds on everything that worked — with refined curriculum, deeper content, and an even more intentional community experience.

"With singing bowls, I'm always searching for the center of the sound. With gongs, the center finds you."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already own a gong to enroll?
No. The first module covers gong selection in detail, and Ben will guide you through exactly what to look for and where to find it. The Ohm Store also offers a curated selection of gongs for students. That said, having access to a gong during the course will significantly deepen your learning.
What if I can't attend the live sessions?
All live sessions are recorded and made available within 24 hours. You can participate fully in the course on your own schedule. That said, the live sessions are where a lot of the magic happens — we encourage you to attend as many as you can.
I already lead sound baths. Is this course for me?
Yes — often more so than for beginners. Experienced practitioners consistently report that Gong School gives them a technical and conceptual framework that transforms their existing practice. Ben's curriculum is designed to meet you where you are and take you further than you expected.
What is the early bird discount?
The exact discount amount will be announced when enrollment opens at the end of March. What we can tell you is that the early bird price will be meaningfully lower than the general enrollment price — and it will only be available to people on this list, for a limited window.
How much time per week does the course require?
Plan for approximately 3–5 hours per week: the core video module (60–90 min), the listening exercise (30–45 min), practical homework (60–90 min), and the live session (60 min). The more time you invest, the more you'll get out of it.
Is there a community component?
Yes. Students have access to a private community space where they can share recordings, ask questions, and connect with fellow practitioners from around the world. Many of the most meaningful connections from Gong School 1.0 came from this community.
What is your refund policy?
We offer a full refund within 7 days of the course start date, no questions asked. After that, we're unable to offer refunds, but we'll do everything we can to make sure you get full value from the program.
