Playing "Half Moon" Back And Forth Around The Rim

The Largest Crystal Singing Bowl In The World: 32 Inch Diameter First Octave Resonant Instrument

Sale price$7,999.00

This is a 150-pound quartz masterpiece instrument producing a fundamental note under 50 hertz, generating a sound wave that's 23+ feet large and is so large you can sit, stand, kneel inside of it.

This bowl, when invited to sing when tapped on it's side builds and and sustains audibly for minutes.

At this frequency and mass, the bowl has transcended music, into a physical force.

Enveloping the room and participants in sound.

This is a showcase piece. A show-stopping, chest impacting singing bowl large enough to crawl inside and feel the vibrations conducted through your physical body.

I measured these bowls several times; fundamental note will fall directly within the thoracic cavity's resonant range (50-80 Hz).

You'll feel it your chest. Thirty to fifty percent of the vibrational energy transmits through the floor as structure-borne vibration, palpable at distances of several feet. Below 60 Hz, perception shifts from primarily auditory to tactile.

Put more simply, you'll deeply feel and hear this bowl at the same time.

Listen the sound clips, watch the videos -- use headphones for the closest possible re-creation of what it will sound like in person.

What Makes This Different?

The Wavelength Is Larger Than the Room

At 48 Hz, the wavelength is 23.5 feet.

A standing adult occupies approximately 25% of a single compression cycle.

Below 80 Hz, sound becomes "non-directional" and spatially diffuse. You cannot easily "know" from where the sound is coming from, you are now inside the sound.

Sub-Body Energy: 35-60 Hz

Even though the audible pitch centers around 48 Hz on strike and 99 Hz when sung, there is real sub harmonic structure below this due to the bowl's mass.

This is felt energy, rather than audibly experienced musical notes. This is what separates a "nice sounding bowl" from a bowl whose physical impact can easily be felt.

The Sustain Is "Off The Charts"

It will persist for several minutes.

I'd walked away from the bowl, thought I had tinnitus or a ringing in my ears, realized that the bowl's slow hum was still goiung.

Fused quartz has a very low internal dampening -- lowest of any structural material at room temperature.

Once set into vibration, the material loses very little energy to internal friction. The decay curve, or the loss of energy of the bowl, is slow, and smooth.

Q Factor: 8,000-15,000 (Q factor "quality factor" is simply a measure of how long something rings once you set it in motion. Q factor tells you how efficiently an object stores vibration instead of losing it.)

For comparison:

  • Drumhead: Q = 10-20
  • 12 inch Bronze Bowl: 800-1,500 (90 seconds)
  • 20+ inch Bronze Bowl: 2,000-4,000 (sustain: 2-4 minutes)
  • Tuning fork: Q = 1,000-5,000
  • This bowl: Q = 8,000-15,000

Harmonic Balance: Large and Slow

We ran this bowl through several sound spectrum analyzers, and this bowl's frequency response shows minimal energy above 200 Hz and almost no energy above 500 Hz.

There is no brittle or glassy energy fighting for attention. Unlike a handmade bronze singing bowl, the overtones don't ascend inharmonically up and upi.

The sound reads as large and slow. Long. Deep.

Attack Behavior: Clean and Controlled (when you tap the bowl on it's side)

The attack excites (sets into motion) the rim cleanly, does not explode into uncontrolled high harmonics, and transitions smoothly into the steady mode. Strike her firmly, without fearing for an explosion of unwanted sound.

This is a bowl you can use at the beginning of a session, at the deepest point, and at the close. That versatility is rare.

How the Body Receives 48 Hz

Below 60 Hz, perception involves sensory systems beyond hearing! We hear it, we feel it. It "feels" through us, transmitting its vibrational energy through systems near, and in contact with this bowl.

Mechanoreceptors in skin: Pacinian corpuscles (pressure- and vibration-sensing nerve endings) respond optimally to 40-800 Hz vibration. They detect vibration transmitted through air and through contact with vibrating surfaces.

Bone conduction: Low-frequency vibration transmits through skeletal structure, your skull, sternum, ribs, pelvis. It conducts to inner ear structures and throughout the body.

Proprioceptive feedback: Vibration-sensitive nerve endings in muscles, tendons, and joints detect oscillation.

Vestibular system: The inner ear's balance organs detect low-frequency oscillation.

Body Resonance

The human body has characteristic resonant frequencies:

  • Whole-body: 4-8 Hz
  • Thoracic cavity (chest): 50-80 Hz
  • Abdominal cavity: 4-8 Hz

The 48 Hz fundamental falls within the thoracic cavity's resonant range. The ribcage, lungs, and surrounding tissues will experience sympathetic vibration in response to the acoustic wave.

Primary sensation: Chest-centered pressure
Secondary sensation: Gentle downward grounding through legs
Neurological effect: Calming, stabilizing, non-stimulating

This is why the bowl feels deep, not exactly "loud"

How Is The Sound Transmitted?

When struck, vibrational energy distributes:

  • Acoustic radiation (airborne sound): 20-30%
  • Structural transmission (floor coupling): 30-50%
  • Material damping (heat): 20-30%

Tactile Perception Range (Low-Frequency / Large Bowl Resonance)

  • 0–6 feet Intense, full-body sensation. Whole-body pressure; vibration felt through legs, chest, and skeletal structure. (**most intense with sitting, kneeling, standing inside the bowl)

  • 6–13 feet Clear and pronounced, especially in chest, abdomen, and feet
Strong mechanoreceptor and bone-conduction engagement; still more felt than heard.

  • 13–20 feet. Subtle but clearly detectable. Sensation shifts from pressure to awareness of slow air movement and bodily resonance.

  • Beyond ~20 feet. Primarily auditory. Physical vibration drops off; perception transitions to hearing rather than touch.

A Map Of The Sounds

48 Hz fundamental (side strike): Deep flexural mode where the bowl walls oscillate in and out (this is how all singing bowls produce sound) Wavelength: 23+ feet

99 Hz rim tone (sustained singing): The steady-state tone when the rim is sung continuously. Please note -- it is a small learning curve to play this bowl around the rim! It's better done in "half moon" style than attempting to go "all the way around" due to the huge size!

Wavelength: 11.3 feet. The near 2:1 ratio with the fundamental shows harmonic alignment close to a perfect octave. This is a clean, stable sustained note with excellent symmetry!

Sub-body energy (35-60 Hz band): Present and meaningful. Felt energy that registers in the chest and legs. It's there, feeling it deeply.

What This Bowl Is?

This is a foundation bowl and an anchor.

It holds space reliably.

It pairs exceptionally well with higher crystal bowls and bronze bowls.

A very serious, incredible instrument.
