Master gong-smith José Antonio Álvarez has envisioned and created a fifteen piece installation of Radha Gongs. Each is meticulously brought to life by the work of his practiced hands.

The Desert Flower And Radha

The charred central circle resembles a desert flower. Two precisely hatched lines radiate outward.

The sound will build, I experienced a cluster of close frequencies which creates a slow, pulsing sensation.

In "full bloom" the Radha unfolds beautifully, and you will feel it in your body. With a still controlled shimmer "up top" it's still a listening experience. Body, and ears engaged and it's a bit of a surround sound feeling being next to one.

The Three-Week Journey

The gong begins as a silver-nickel "sheet" and Jose marks it, to guide his hammered and firing. The edge is burned in numerologically aligned patterns, then cooled for days while the metal rests, and relaxes. It's a slow unfolding the tension.

The rest phases are important, there is as much skill and artistry in the stopping of work, as in the hammering.
