The Gong Plate. Hand-forged by José Antonio Álvarez in Spain. Fire patina silver-nickel alloy. Each one unrepeatable.
"The sound sustains for over 40 seconds from a single strike."
A single strike creates forty seconds of sustained resonance, two dominant frequencies in a perfect 2:1 harmonic ratio. Sustain is the "dosage" of an instrument like this, and the harmonic structure is noteworthy simple because it's sound is balanced!
The Gong Plate is hand-forged by José Antonio Álvarez in Spain from silver-nickel alloy sourced from one of the handful of European foundries capable of producing it, even the metals alone are a rarity to find!
Only the second release of this instrument, 35 are available as of June 2026. The colors you see are fire patina: heat oxidation applied from the forge, with no paint, dyes, or chemical applications. Each plate emerges differently.
Below is a precise account of what this instrument does acoustically, why the alloy and the process matter, and what five specific things happen when you strike it.
Spectrum analysis of the Gong Plate reveals two dominant frequencies around 300 Hz and 600 Hz, depending on which of the three included mallets you use. The relationship between these two frequencies is a perfect octave: a 2:1 ratio. This is the most consonant interval in acoustic physics, the same ratio that defines the relationship between a fundamental and its first overtone in every musical tradition on earth.
Most percussion instruments produce complex overtone clouds where dozens of frequencies compete for dominance. The Gong Plate produces focused, pure resonance with bell-like, clean sustain. Where singing bowls produce 8 to 12 complex overtones, this plate delivers two dominant frequencies in a precise harmonic relationship. The auditory cortex resolves this interval immediately and completely, producing a quality of clarity that is distinct from the complex inharmonic textures of bronze bowls.
"Where singing bowls produce 8 to 12 complex overtones, these plates deliver pure, focused resonance with bell-like, clean sustain."
The 40-second sustain of the Gong Plate is a direct consequence of the silver-nickel alloy. Internal damping, the rate at which a vibrating material converts kinetic energy into heat, determines how long a struck instrument continues to ring. Silver-nickel has exceptionally low internal damping relative to its density. The energy of a single strike dissipates slowly, sustaining the resonance long after the mallet has left the surface.
This is why sourcing the alloy is one of the most challenging parts of making these instruments. Only a handful of metallurgists and master foundrymen can produce silver-nickel in the form required. José Antonio Álvarez waited months to receive the raw material. The sustained resonance you hear is the direct acoustic expression of that alloy's physical properties, not a feature of the playing technique or the mallet.
"Only a handful of metallurgists and master foundrymen can produce this alloy. We waited months to receive the raw material."
The colors on the Gong Plate are fire patina: heat oxidation applied from the forge. No paint, no dyes, no chemical applications. The colors you see, ranging from deep blues and purples to oranges and yellows, are the direct result of how the metal's surface chemistry responded to heat during the forging process. Thin-film interference, the same physics that produces color in soap bubbles and oil slicks, creates the iridescent color gradients across the plate's surface.
Because the temperature distribution across the plate during forging is never identical between two pieces, and because José hand-hammers each plate individually with a vision that evolves through the making, no two plates carry the same patina. Each one emerges differently. The 35 plates available in this release are 35 distinct objects. Customers who have received their plates describe the patina as ranging from blue and purple to orange and yellow, with dark bubble features across the surface.

Three mallets are included with each plate, and each one produces different tonal characteristics. This is not a marketing claim. It is a physical consequence of how struck percussion instruments work. The hardness, mass, and contact surface of a mallet determine which frequencies in the plate's resonant spectrum are preferentially excited. A harder mallet with a smaller contact area excites higher frequencies more strongly. A softer mallet with a larger contact area excites lower frequencies and produces a warmer, rounder attack.
Customers who have experimented with additional mallets beyond the three included report discovering new tonal qualities in the plate. One reviewer found that a stronger mallet produced even richer tones, and that waving the plate back and forth while it was ringing produced a pronounced waah-wash effect. The plate responds to technique. It rewards exploration.

The combination of a clean 2:1 harmonic ratio, a 40-second sustain, and the bell-like clarity of the silver-nickel alloy produces an acoustic event that is highly salient to the auditory system. Salience, in neuroscience, refers to the degree to which a stimulus stands out from its background and captures attention. A pure, sustained, harmonically simple tone in the 300–600 Hz range is among the most salient acoustic stimuli the human auditory system processes.
Customers consistently describe the plate's effect in terms of mental clarity and the clearing of cognitive noise. One reviewer describes it as cutting through "mind clutter" and uses it to begin meditation sessions because "it just clears the air." This is the acoustic consequence of a highly salient, sustained, harmonically resolved stimulus: the auditory cortex engages fully, and the competing internal noise of the default mode network quiets in response.

Hand-forged by José Antonio Álvarez in Spain. Silver-nickel alloy with fire patina. Three mallets included. Only 35 available.
Only a handful of metallurgists and master foundrymen can produce the silver-nickel alloy used in the Gong Plate. It is one of the most challenging alloys to source in instrument-grade form. José Antonio Álvarez waited months to receive the raw material for this release. Each plate is then hand-hammered by José, with a vision for the final form that is determined using tantric numerology and sacred geometry to set the dimensions.
The patina formed during forging as heat oxidized the metal at a molecular level. No two plates carry the same color distribution. The fire patina is a direct record of the forging process, a visual document of the heat and force that shaped the instrument. This is the second release of this product. The first sold out. 35 are available now.
The quality of this Gong Plate is exceptional. The "fire patina" finish by Jose Antonio Alverez makes these true works of art. I discovered that a stronger mallet produced even richer tones in this gong plate. Additionally, the gong plate taught me to wave it back and forth sideways, which produced the waah wash effect. I thoroughly enjoy it!
This is an amazing addition to my collection. Not only has beautiful patina, but an excellent sustain and it is even better at expressing multiple overtones when using a larger mallet. This plate really cuts through the "mind clutter" and is a great way for me to start a meditation session: it just clears the air. If these ever come back in stock, grab one!
First of all let's talk about the look of this piece. The patina is beautiful all across the rectangle. Dark bubble features across the plate range from blue, purple, orange and yellow. The sound is completely immaculate. Depending on where you strike the plate using one of the three provided mallets, you'll notice nice warm, bright and complex midtones.
Not only is this aesthetically pleasing to look at, but the sustain is incredible! I wasn't looking for another instrument to add to my collection, but I am so glad I found this. It's a gorgeous piece of art. It comes in a beautiful box, well packaged and included are three different types of mallets. Thank you so much for this offering.
The Gong Plate is made from silver-nickel alloy sourced from one of the handful of European foundries capable of producing it in instrument-grade form. Silver-nickel has exceptionally low internal damping, which is why the plate sustains for over 40 seconds from a single strike. The alloy also determines the two dominant frequencies around 300 Hz and 600 Hz that give the plate its characteristic bell-like clarity. You cannot replicate this sound with a different alloy.
Fire patina is heat oxidation applied during the forging process. No paint, dyes, or chemical applications are used. The colors you see are the result of thin-film interference on the oxidized metal surface, the same physics that produces color in soap bubbles. The patina is a permanent part of the metal's surface chemistry. It will not fade or peel. Over time, with handling, the surface may develop additional character as the metal continues to oxidize naturally.
This is the second release of the Gong Plate. The first sold out. The quantity is limited by the supply of the silver-nickel alloy, which must be sourced from one of a handful of European foundries capable of producing it. José waited months to receive the raw material for this release. Each plate is hand-hammered individually, which means production is limited by the time and attention José can give to each piece. 35 are available as of June 2026.
Singing bowls produce 8 to 12 complex overtones in an inharmonic spectrum. The Gong Plate produces two dominant frequencies in a perfect 2:1 harmonic ratio, with bell-like, clean sustain. The acoustic experience is fundamentally different: where bowls produce complex, evolving overtone clouds, the plate produces focused, pure resonance. The plate also responds differently to technique: different mallets, different strike points, and movement of the plate while ringing all produce distinct tonal results.
